There is no single plumbing apprentice rate. Check first whether the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award [MA000036] covers the employer or an enterprise agreement does, then use Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool (PACT) for the pay date. The rate depends on the year of the apprenticeship, age when they started, start date, school year completed and whether the work is plumbing and mechanical, fire sprinkler or a NSW trainee.[1][2][5]
Step 1: coverage first
Confirm the employer and employee are covered by the national Fair Work system. If they fall outside it, use the relevant state system rather than assuming the national award calculation applies.
Check whether the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award [MA000036] covers your business and the work, and whether a registered agreement applies. Fair Work says an employee covered by a registered agreement is paid by checking the agreement's rates, and pay guides do not apply where an enterprise agreement covers the employee.
Step 2: gather the classification inputs
The award treats an adult apprentice as someone who is 21 or older when entering the training agreement or contract. Junior rates depend on the year of the apprenticeship, the commencement date and school completion. Plumbing and mechanical apprentices, fire sprinkler apprentices and NSW trainees are calculated differently, so record which stream applies. Progression may be time-based or competency-based depending on the award.
Step 3: build the rate from more than a percentage
Fair Work's plumbing guidance says the ordinary hourly rate depends on apprenticeship year, age at the start, commencement date and schooling, and directs employers to PACT. For plumbing and mechanical apprentices, check the wage component plus the full industry allowance and the apprentice percentage of the plumbing trade allowance and tool allowance. For NSW trainee plumbing and mechanical apprentices, the guidance lists the full industry and tool allowances and the apprentice percentage of the plumbing trade allowance; fire sprinkler calculations differ.
Include applicable all-purpose allowances rather than applying only a base percentage. Do not reuse an electrical apprentice rate, because the electrical and plumbing awards differ in allowances and apprentice types.
Step 4: set the pay date and separate extras
Use the relevant pay date in PACT and check the current award or agreement. Record which all-purpose allowances are already included in the ordinary rate, then calculate only the applicable additional allowances, overtime, penalties, training and travel amounts. Keep the calculation and source date with the pay run so those items are not counted twice.

Common questions
- How much does a 1st year apprentice plumber earn in Australia?
- It depends on classification, not one fixed amount. Check whether the award or an enterprise agreement covers the apprentice, then enter the stream, age when started, start date and school year completed into Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool for the pay date.[2][5]
