WorkSafe Queensland says electrical installation work needs a certificate of testing and compliance, and work on electrical equipment needs a certificate of testing and safety. Give it to the customer as soon as possible after the work and keep a copy for at least 5 years after you give it.[1]
Installation work or equipment work
Under Queensland's Electrical Safety Regulation 2026, an installation certificate is given each time an installation on which electrical work was performed is connected to electricity. An equipment certificate is given each time electrical work is performed on electrical equipment. The contractor whose licence covers the work is responsible for issuing the right certificate.
| Work | Certificate | Statement it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical installation | Certificate of testing and compliance | Installation tested, electrically safe, and meets the wiring rules and other applicable standards |
| Electrical equipment | Certificate of testing and safety | Equipment tested and electrically safe to the extent affected by the work |

What it must contain, who gets it and invoices
The certificate must state the customer's name and address, the equipment or installation tested, the date of the test, your contractor licence number and a suitable certification statement.
Give it to the person who engaged you. If a builder engaged you, the builder is the recipient. WorkSafe says an invoice can serve as the certificate if it carries all the required information and the statement, and you keep a copy for at least 5 years after giving it.
