A tax invoice must make clear it is a tax invoice and show your identity, your ABN, the date, what you sold with quantity and price, the GST amount and which items are taxable. At $1,000 or more it must also show the buyer's identity or ABN.[1][2]
The checklist
These are the ATO's details for a taxable sale. A tax invoice that meets the $1,000 or more column can also be used for smaller sales.

| Document intended as a tax invoice | Yes | Yes |
| Your identity and ABN | Yes | Yes |

Invoice template you can edit
Use this blank template only for a GST-registered supplier making fully taxable sales. Replace the bracketed fields, calculate each amount and check the totals before sending. Include the buyer's identity or ABN for sales of $1,000 or more. For mixed taxable and GST-free items, use the ATO rules linked below instead of the all-taxable statement.

TAX INVOICE Invoice number: [INV-0001] Invoice date: [DD/MM/YYYY] From: [business name] ABN: [your 11-digit ABN] Contact: [your phone and email] To: [buyer name or ABN] Site: [job address] Description | Quantity | Unit price ex GST | Line total ex GST | GST [work or item supplied] | [quantity] | [unit price] | [line total] | [GST amount] [work or item supplied] | [quantity] | [unit price] | [line total] | [GST amount] Total ex GST: [amount] Total GST: [amount] Total payable: [amount] All items above are taxable sales. Pay by: [due date] Payment details: [your bank details or payment link]
Worked example: a $1,100 trade invoice
Illustrative figures only: a GST-registered tradie completes a fully taxable repair. These are example amounts, not suggested trade rates. Replace them with your agreed prices.
- The payable amount is $1,100 including $100 GST. Do not add GST again to the GST-inclusive total.
- Because the total is at least $1,000, include the buyer’s identity or ABN.
- Keep the supplier identity, ABN, issue date and item details alongside the figures. Add the due date and payment method so the customer can act.
| Item | Ex GST | GST | Including GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labour: 4 hours at $150 | $600.00 | $60.00 | $660.00 |
| Materials supplied: 1 lot | $400.00 | $40.00 | $440.00 |
| Total | $1,000.00 | $100.00 | $1,100.00 |

When to give one, and if you are not registered
If a customer asks for a tax invoice, you must provide one within 28 days, unless the sale is $82.50 or less including GST. A PDF sent by email is fine if it carries all the required details.
If you are not registered for GST, issue a regular invoice with no GST. Do not use the words 'tax invoice'. There is no law setting out its contents, but common practice is your business name, ABN, invoice number, date, contact details, a description with quantity and price, payment terms and the buyer's name.
ABN invoice when you are not registered for GST
An ABN does not make you GST-registered. If you are not registered, use a regular invoice. For example, an agreed $750 repair remains $750 payable; do not add 10% GST.
To adapt the editable template above, change TAX INVOICE to INVOICE, remove the GST columns and totals, remove 'ex GST' from the price headings, and remove the statement that all items are taxable sales. State that no GST has been charged. Keep your business identity, ABN, invoice date, work description, price and payment details.

Common questions
- Do invoices in Australia need to say tax invoice?
- For a GST-registered business, put the words 'tax invoice' on it. The ATO's actual test is that the document is intended to be a tax invoice, and it accepts some Peppol eInvoices without the words. If you are not registered, you must not use 'tax invoice'.[1][2]
- What are the requirements for a valid tax invoice?
- Show that it is a tax invoice, your identity and ABN, the date, a brief description with quantity and price, the GST amount and which sales are taxable. For sales of $1,000 or more, add the buyer's identity or ABN. If the invoice is wrong, replace it with a correct one when the buyer asks.[1][2]
- Can I use an ABN invoice template without being registered for GST?
- Yes. Use a regular invoice headed Invoice, show your ABN and agreed price, and state that no GST is charged. Remove the GST amounts and tax-invoice wording from a GST template first.[2]
