A good quote states the scope, what is included and excluded, the price and its GST basis, your assumptions, how long it is valid, payment terms and a space for acceptance. Once a customer accepts, it can form a binding contract, subject to the law that applies.[1][2]

What the template is built from

Worked example: turn a vague price into a clear scope
Illustrative example for a GST-registered supplier: replace one customer-supplied kitchen mixer at an existing connection, during normal weekday hours. The numbers below demonstrate a quote layout; they are not market rates or a promise that this work suits every site.
- Replace every placeholder, including the payment due date and any permitted deposit.
- If you are not GST-registered, remove the GST line and say no GST is charged.
- For regulated residential building work, use the required contract and consumer protections rather than relying on this example.
| Quote field | Example wording |
|---|---|
| Included | Remove the existing mixer, supply replacement flexible connectors and sealing materials, install the customer-supplied mixer at the same connection, check for leaks and remove the old mixer. |
| Excluded | New pipework, changes to the benchtop, concealed defects and supply of the replacement mixer. |
| Price | Labour $240 + flexible connectors and sealing materials $60 = $300 excluding GST. GST $30. Total payable $330 including GST. |
| Assumptions | Replacement suits the existing connection; isolation works and access is clear. |
| Validity and timing | Insert an expiry date and agreed start and finish dates. |
| Changes | If the site differs, explain the change and agree the revised scope and price in writing before the extra work. |

Before using it for residential building work
Residential building work can require a specific written contract and consumer protections. Check the rules with your state building regulator before using this template. Keep the scope and price clear, and use the required building contract where the rules call for one.

Common questions
- How legally binding is a quote?
- An accepted quote can form a legally binding contract. Write the scope, price and terms clearly, and check any extra contract requirements for residential building work in your state.[1][2]
- How long will a quotation be valid?
- Put an expiry date in the quote. business.gov.au includes this in its written-quote checklist. Choose a period that reflects how long you can hold the supplier prices and job slot.[1]
