When a Queensland gas fitter completes a gas installation, they issue the owner or operator of the system an original gas system compliance certificate through the RSHQ Portal. If the system is supplied by a distribution system or fuel gas network, the network operator also gets the certificate. A fuel system in a vehicle, vessel or stationary engine uses a separate inspection certificate.[1]
Which certificate for which job
Queensland requires compliance certificates and defect notices tied to a gas work licence or authorisation to be submitted through the RSHQ Portal. Gas work licences for hydrocarbon refrigerants joined the Portal from 20 June 2026.
| Situation | Document | Goes to |
|---|---|---|
| Completed gas installation | Gas system compliance certificate | The owner or operator (original copy), and the network operator if the system is supplied by a distribution system or fuel gas network |
| Inspect, alter or install part of a gas fuel system in a vehicle, vessel or stationary engine | Gas system inspection certificate | The owner or operator (original copy) |
| Authorised to approve gas devices | Gas device approval certificate | Issued separately by the approval holder |

Defect notices and plates
If you have safety concerns about a gas system you are working on, you must give the owner or operator a defect notice. You do not need one if you immediately remedy the concern. Where there is an imminent risk of material harm, you must also act to control it and report it by phone.
Since July 2025 most installations no longer need a physical compliance plate. Caravans are the exception.

Common questions
- How to get a gas compliance certificate?
- The licensed gas worker who completes the installation issues it through the RSHQ Portal and gives the owner or operator the original copy. If you are the owner, ask your gas fitter for it when the job is finished. Network-supplied systems also go to the network operator.[1]
